Woodstock 1969

“The original plan was for an outdoor rock festival, ‘three days of peace and music’ in the Catskill village of Woodstock. What the young promoters got was the third largest city in New York state, population 400,000 (give or take 100,000), location Max Yasgur’s dairy farm near the town of White Lake.”
So began LIFE magazine’s description, in its August 29, 1969 issue, of what has come to be seen as one of the defining events of the 1960s. Forty-three years later, presents a gallery of pictures — many of which never ran in the magazine — from those heady, rain-soaked days and nights.

Max Yasgur was dairy farmer in the town of Bethel, New York. In 1969 he agreed to lease his 600 acre dairy farm for ‘three days of peace and music’ and his farm became the site where history was made. Yasgur would soon have nearly half a million people on his property attending The Woodstock Music and Art Fair. On August, 17th he addressed the crowd:

“I’m a farmer, I don’t know how to speak to twenty people at one time, let alone a crowd like this. But I think you people have proven something to the world — not only to the Town of Bethel, or Sullivan County, or New York State; you’ve proven something to the world. This is the largest group of people ever assembled in one place. We have had no idea that there would be this size group, and because of that you’ve had quite a few inconveniences as far as water, food, and so forth. Your producers have done a mammoth job to see that you’re taken care of… they’d enjoy a vote of thanks. But above that, the important thing that you’ve proven to the world is that a half a million kids — and I call you kids because I have children that are older than you are — a half million young people can get together and have three days of fun and music and have nothing but fun and music, and I God Bless You for it!”
